The large irregular material in the center of the field is inertinite  Note the extreme deformation of the other macerals around it that indicates that the inertinite was rigid when it was incorporated into the peat that formed the coal. The red material here is vitrinite. All of the yellow features are sporinite. The white spots are holes in the thin section are voids in the inertinite. (transmitted light, Harlan Seam, eastern Kentucky, width of field, left to right: ~350 µm)
