The red matrix material here is vitrinite. All of the yellow features are sporinite. The large dark red feature in the center of the field is resinite. The irregular borders are unusual. Note the deformation around the resinite body. The overall texture of this field shows vitrinite acting as a matrix in which all of the other macerals are embedded (transmitted light, Harlan Seam, eastern Kentucky, width of field, left to right: ~350 µm)
