The red structure in the center of the field is resinite. Note the deformation of the other macerals around the resinite. This indicates that the resinite was rigid when it was incorporated into the peat that formed the coal. The red matrix material is vitrinite and the black material is inertinite. The yellow material is sporinite except for the two larger pieces that are resinite. (transmitted light, Harlan Seam, eastern Kentucky, width of field, left to right: ~350 µm)
